 2016-17 USDA Reimbursement Rates

The 2016-17 USDA School Meals Reimbursement Rates have been published.  The rates are accessible via the School Nutrition home page (see What’s New… section) and the Financial Management page.  The USDA also has the rates posted at: http://www.fns.usda.gov/school-meals/rates-reimbursement.

The School Nutrition Technology System has been updated with the 2016-17 Reimbursement Rates and SFAs are cleared to submit claims for reimbursement.   

REMINDER:  Claims for reimbursement payments for July 2016 will not be released until we are sure that all SFA claims are calculated at the correct rate.

  • HACCP Plans - Transported and Homestyle

The School Nutrition HACCP Plans for Transported Meals and Homestyle Meals have been updated for the 2016-17 school year. To download the appropriate documents you will find direct links to the respective HACCP Plan pages on the School Nutrition home page Or, site visitors can go to the HACCP/Food Safety page to locate these and other HACCP resources.

  • Awards and Recognition Opportunities at the 2016 Annual Conference

If you have earned any special recognition in your SFA since October 2015, please let us know as we want to recognize you at the upcoming SN Administrator's Conference in October.  Information about the award and the awardees will be included in the conference program and you will be recognized from the podium at one of the conference general sessions.

**NEW SUBMISSION DATE**

We found it necessary to move the date for submitting your award information back by a couple of weeks.  This will allow our Graphics Dept. ample time to design the conference program with information included.  SFAs are asked to please e-mail your information to Janice Ezzell at by Friday, September 23, 2016.

 

  • SAVE THE DATE! SummerPalooza Summits Expanding Summer Meals for Children 2017

North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, School Nutrition Services Section will offer a collaborative workshop to provide a jumpstart for summer nutrition 2017. This workshop will provide an opportunity to learn more about the summer nutrition programs in North Carolina, identify ways to reduce barriers, and pinpoint areas where summer meals are needed to reduce food insecurity. Champion presentations will provide creative opportunities for continuous summer nutrition program expansion through effective partnerships.

Workshop Goals and Objectives

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Define the goals and objectives of the summer nutrition programs.
  2. Identify the summer nutrition program’s unserved and underserved area.
  3. Strategize to eliminate and or reduce barriers using best practices employed by other organizations that operate summer nutrition programs.
  4. Work collaboratively with community stakeholders to address participation deserts, set goals and actions to improve access in their community.
  5. Implement steps to improve summer nutrition program access.
  6. Continue collaborative work to achieve continuous summer nutrition expansion.

Audience and Credit
Target audiences include School Food Authorities, Colleges or Universities, and Public and Private Non Profit organizations that desire to learn more about improving access to the Summer Nutrition Programs.  Professional Development certificates will be awarded to participants who are present for the entire workshop.

Meals and Travel Lunch will be provided to registered participants.  Participants are responsible for all additional expenses including mileage, lodging if needed, and food and beverages for breaks and additional meals.

Registration and Schedule
Registration information for the workshops will be released and posted on the School Nutrition website in September 2016.  The workshops are scheduled for 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with sign in at 9:30 – 10:00 am. for the dates and locations below.  Pre-registration is required.

Continuing Education Opportunities

  • NC Safe Plates: A Certified Food Protection Manager Course and Examination

Date:  August 24-26, 2016

Location:  Bolivia Elementary School (Training Room), 4036 Business Hwy. 17-East, Bolivia NC, 28422

This course prepares participants for American National Standards Institution (ANSI) approved Food Protection Manager Certification (CFPM) examination offered by the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals. Successful completion of the exam meets the FDA North Carolina Food Code requirement for a CFPM. Those participating in the course are able to create a work environment that minimizes food safety risks in food establishments through best practices, open communication, and thoughtful practice.

Registration & Payment
The cost is $70.00 per person. If paying by check, you may contact Iyana Porter at North Carolina State University McKimmon Center at importer@ncsu.edu or (919) 515-8185 and she will assist you with one of the follow options:

    1. Mail the check and attached Course Registration Form(s) to Iyana at the McKimmon Center. Registration will be processed upon receipt.
    2. Provide a copy of the company issued purchase order with the attached registration form(s) via email or fax which will initiate the invoicing and registration process.

When registering, each participant must provide a valid email address so that important class information may be communicated if needed. Registration will close one week prior to each class and onsite registration and payment cannot be processed. Iyana will confirm registrations by email. We are unable to offer refunds for this course and exam; however, you may notify Iyana to make a participant substitution or to move the registration to another workshop if/when scheduled.

 

  • NC Produce Safety Academy

Apply now for Produce Safety Workshops in North Carolina. Two workshops will be held this fall – September 20-22 and September 27-29. If you purchase produce from any source, you will want to make plans to attend.  

The 3-day continuing education course is designed to help School Nutrition professionals identify and manage food safety risks associated with fresh produce. Through classroom instruction, hands-on activities and a field trip, participants will learn about food safety from the farm to the serving line.

This course is open to School Nutrition Directors and Supervisors in the LEAs. Space is limited to one person per School Food Authority. Hotel accommodations will be provided. The School Food Authority is responsible for all additional expenses such as mileage and meals.

This training is based on USDA’s “Produce Safety University”.  This course was developed by staff from NCDA&CS, NC State and NCDPI. The training is funded through a USDA Farm to School grant.
