Healthy Active Children Policy

In 2005, the NC State Board of Education (NCSBE) passed the Healthy Active Children (HAC) policy. In 2014 and 2016, the NCSBE updated the HAC policy.  The policy incorporates the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Local Wellness Policy Final Rule and outlines requirements for LEAs and schools in regards to school health advisory councils (SHACs); Physical Education (PE) and Healthful Living Education; physical activity; recess; nutrition services, education and promotion; and policy monitoring. Superintendents and principals are required to complete and submit an annual attestation form to the NCSBE regarding their schools’ compliance with the HAC Policy. In addition, LEAs and schools must report on minutes of physical activity, PE, and Healthful Living Education provided to students and progress with implementation, evaluation and communication regarding local wellness policy.
