  • **NOTICE** Zone 2 Consultant Change

The School Nutrition Services Section would like to announce a change in the Zone 2 Consultant.  Linda Harding, Zone 2 Consultant will retire as of August 1, 2016.  We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Linda for her years of service to the School Food Authorities and the children of North Carolina and we wish her a very happy retirement.

The new Zone Consultant for Zone 2 will be Frank Fiorella.  Please take the opportunity to welcome Frank at the Policy Update in Clemmons, NC on August 9, 2016.  Frank will continue to provide as much support as possible in Zone 4 until the position has been filled.  Karla Wheeler will also be willing to assist.  The vacancy announcement for the Zone 4 Consultant position will be advertised in the near future.


  • August 2016 Policy Updates and Zone 5 Change

The August Policy Updates for School Nutrition Administrators is approaching. Please select the session of your choice below and register by the requested deadlines so that room set up and meals may be arranged efficiently. Timely registration is especially important so that the consultants and specialists can coordinate the arrangements for the Team Up work groups.

**IMPORTANT NOTICE** Please note the new location of the Zone 5 Policy Update.  The registration link has not changed, just the location.  Please plan accordingly.  

Lunch will be provided for those registering in advance; however participants are responsible for all additional travel, breaks, snacks, coffee, and additional beverages.

Tentative agenda topics include: Team Up for School Nutrition Success discussion groups, Civil Rights, Verification, Updates on HACCP, Sharing Tables and Local Wellness Policy, Block Grants, Second Review of Applications, On-site Reviews, and new USDA Policy Memorandums.

An evaluation link will be sent after the session and a continuing education certificate for the session will be provided when the evaluation is completed.

  • Professional Standards Q&A

When USDA issued the rules on Professional Standards, some issues were left up to the State Agencies (SA) to decide.  The document entitled:   Q & A:  North Carolina Additional Requirements for Professional Standards Continuing Education, contains the official position of the School Nutrition Services Section, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on these issues.  This document will be updated as new issues emerge which require SA positions. 

Policy Memo, SP 38-2016 (Questions and Answers (Q&As) on the Final Rule “Professional Standards for State and Local School Nutrition Programs Personnel as Required by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010) updates and replaces SP 39-2015 (Professional Standards for State and Local School Nutrition Programs Personnel as Required by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, June 26, 2015).  This updated version includes several new questions that reflect operator’s experience in the first year of implementation.  You will see the words [New/Revised] appearing next to the new or significantly revised questions. 


  • SAVE THE DATE! SummerPalooza Summits Expanding Summer Meals for Children 2017

    North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, School Nutrition Services Section will offer a collaborative workshop to provide a jumpstart for summer nutrition 2017. This workshop will provide an opportunity to learn more about the summer nutrition programs in North Carolina, identify ways to reduce barriers, and pinpoint areas where summer meals are needed to reduce food insecurity. Champion presentations will provide a creative opportunities for continuous summer nutrition program expansion through effective partnerships.

    Workshop Goals and Objectives
    At the conclusion of the workshop, participants should be able to:

    1. Define the goals and objectives of the summer nutrition programs.
    2. Identify the summer nutrition program’s unserved and underserved area.
    3. Strategize to eliminate and or reduce barriers using best practices employed by other organizations that operate summer nutrition programs.
    4. Work collaboratively with community stakeholders to address participation deserts, set goals and actions to improve access in their community.
    5. Implement steps to improve summer nutrition program access.
    6. Continue collaborative work to achieve continuous summer nutrition expansion.

    Audience and Credit
    Target audiences include School Food Authorities, Colleges or Universities, and Public and Private Non Profit organizations that desire to learn more about improving access to the Summer Nutrition Programs.  Professional Development certificates will be awarded to participants who are present for the entire workshop.

    Meals and Travel
    Lunch will be provided to registered participants.  Participants are responsible for all additional expenses including mileage, lodging if needed, and food and beverages for breaks and additional meals.

    Registration information for the workshops will be released and posted on the School Nutrition website in September 2016.  The workshops are scheduled for 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with registration at 9:30 – 10:00 am. for the dates and locations below:

Please e-mail this information to Janice Ezzell at by Friday, October 7, 2016. The information will be included in the conference program and you will be recognized from the podium at one of the general sessions.
