Using the Summer Food Service Program or Seamless Summer Option in Emergency Situations Including Inclement Weather

Did you know that you can operate the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) or Seamless Summer Option (SSO) for inclement weather emergencies such as snow? Absolutely!

NCDPI-School Nutrition Services encourages SFAs to plan for emergency situations in advance to ensure a rapid response in cases of unexpected school closures as a result of inclement weather which includes, but is not limited to, snow and flooding.  To prepare for such situations NCDPI will pre-approve sponsors to operate emergency meal sites during unanticipated school closures during the application process and as often as needed to meet the SFA’s needs.  In order to accomplish this for the SFSP, SFAs should:

    1. Access each applicable Site Application in the School Nutrition Technology System and select “Yes” on Question 35.
    2. Submit for approval.

If you are interested in operating an SSO site during emergency situations, please send via email the name of the site(s) to Cynthia Ervin at  In the subject line of the email please enter:  SSO Disaster Response Request.

Per 7 CFR 225.6(c)…SFAs may determine that operating SFSP or SSO sites would be useful when schools must remain closed due to disaster situations or emergencies.  SFAs may operate the SFSP to open emergency meal sites serving an area affected by an unanticipated school closure during the period from October through April (or at any time of the year in an area with a continuous school calendar).  SFSP regulations also allow for expedited approval of meal sites during an emergency.

For more information please review USDA Policy Memo SP 46-2014 (SFSP 18-2014) - Disaster Response.

2016 Summer Food Service and Seamless Summer Option Application Process in Full Swing
